5 interesting facts about rye
Rye is a popular ancient grain. Here are five facts about it:
- Rye is rich in fibre and contains some B vitamins and important minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and calcium, which are essential for the good functioning of our body.
- Rye is currently experiencing a renaissance, not only because of its health benefits, but also be-cause of its strong, spicy, rustic taste, reminiscent of the life in the mountains.
- In addition to its taste, rye bread is highly appreciated because it dries out more slowly and stays fresh longer than other types of bread. This is because, unlike other cereals, rye can retain humidity for a longer time.
- Rye is very resistant to cold temperatures, in fact, it can withstand frosts up to -25°C and humidity and dryness don't bother it that much either.
- Since 2011, rye has been increasingly cultivated in South Tyrol thanks to the project "Regiokorn".
